It has been a week free of fresh disasters, and so the plan is to try extubating to CPAP this afternoon. Again.
Simone wasn’t wild about the process last time, and I have been trying to explain to her about Choosing Your Battles.
After finding her sound asleep in the following pose, I am not sure the message is getting through:

Look how advanced she is already! She’ll be throwing gang signs any day now.
Thank you for the laugh, Simone. May you give your mom and the wide world many, many more (laughs, not “fingers”)
I love that baby! Rock on Simone…
She’s a feisty cutie pie! Go Simone!
How utterly cute. Is it possible Nurse Culvert passed back by Simone’s isolette? A girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do.
I think she’s requesting 5 more minutes.
Don’t ya think it’s that “f*ck you” attitude that has been the secret of her success? Go, Simone!
Oh, look at that squooshy baby ear. So freaking cute.
Awesome. Just awesome.
She is warning them in advance. I hope today goes well.
I would expect nothing less from her.
But Simone, listen to your mom and pick your battles, even in the NICU…
Thinking of and praying for you all often.
I think I’m in love. She’s stealing my heart, what with telling them to get the fk out of her face during naptime. NAPTIME PEOPLE! Stay tough, Simone. You rock.
Oh boy…are you in trouble. Good luck today and go get ‘em Simone!
She’s a feisty one, that Simone. I like her spirit.
That photo is priceless!
Fabulous…she’s giving the finger to the universe and reminding it not to fuck with her anymore!
My fingers are crossed for the extubation….
They start early don’t they! LOL!
That picture has SO got to come out on prom night, to be shown to the date and to totally embarrass Simone.
Dude, Simone is my home girl. She just is.
I’m sure she means it kindly!
What a wonderful little girlie. Not long now until she’ll be into the fat farm, chomping Mummy’s boobs into bruises, burping hugely into Daddy’s ear (a dry burp, if Scott’s lucky) and producing milky poos of biblical proportions. Just got to get this bothersome business of breathing sorted out first…Go Simone! Think: CPAP good!
Mine sulked hugely when extubated, and spent the next 4 days industriously trying to demolish the CPAP apparatus in protest, before graduating to continual self-extraction of his nasal gastric tube. Blighter. I think the baby in the next incubator along told him how…
Family Flotsam are all very much in our thoughts. Praying for an early homecoming.
xxx
That’s my GIRL! Tell it like it is, Simone.
Good luck with the extubation. Many fingers and toes crossed for NO NEW SURPRISES. Boring is good.
So precious (and pretty hilarious too)! Keeping you all in my thoughts and hope everything goes well this afternoon.
She may be a helpless micropreemie in the NICU, but don’t mess with her!
Warning: This is a baby not to be f*cked with. You go, girl!
YEAH, Simone! That kind of spunky attitude will serve you well, hehe. It’ll be tough on your Ma, though, so make sure you breathe properly and all that to ease her mind, you hear? You little sweet nugget!
Oh my God that is the BEST photo I have seen of her. Simone – you go girl! I have a feeling she’ll be a strong and opinionated woman that takes no crap.
Way to go Simone and Mum.
Am just loving the updates and so happy to see that the dramas are less this week. Still thinking of you all.
Jules
BWAHAHAHAAAA! That picture ROCKS–definitely YOUR daughter! But for fuck’s sake, FIX HER EAR!!! Ever since you mentioned that I’ve been looking at preemies’ ears (I follow a lot of preemie blogs–two of mine were early, although not THAT early)…when she’s a little older you should do what I did to my youngest–propped the poor sleeping babe on the couch with the neck of a Corona in the crook of one arm and “The Happiest Baby On The Block” draped over the wee little belly. Posing babies and taking humiliating pictures of them is one of the many rewards I think are only fair for us to claim as parents, since the little buggers put us through such angst!
You can’t deny that child…she’s definitely *your* daughter, Alexa. And she’s looking so healthy! Way to grow, Simone, keep it up. I’m hoping that finger is intended for the ventilator, and she’s telling it to fsck off so she can graduate to the CPAP and then on to independent breathing. As always, thoughts and prayers are with your sweet family.
What a great shot! Makes me smile to see her picture and to hear that she’s doing well. Keep on keeping on Simone – you rock!
Pulling for you guys for a smooth transfer to CPAP! My little Sadie born at 2 pounds is now a fat 7 at three-months-old. It’s amazing how thankful one can be for 7 pounds! You’ll be there soon!
Oh and I just read back over the comments, and watch out! Not only did my youngest yank the NG tube at the tender age of nine weeks, but the little turd also developed Satan’s Own precocious fine-motor skills and could pick and peel the edge of hospital tape by three and a half months…she’s already figured out she’s got at least ONE finger, and one is all it takes to snag something and start with the drama…don’t worry, no matter HOW much tape they have to use, mine now at two has flawlessly plumptious cheeks even though a couple of times the skin broke down BADLY from the tape, poor thing! But yes, that one will be trouble.
That is a girl that knows exactly what she does and doesn’t want. I want to give her a hearty ‘fuck yeah’.
She’s all “CPAP this, suckas”
Now There is a Girl that Means Business! Rock that Finger Simone
Best.Baby.Picture.EVER!! I’m so glad to see that she’s got a little sass. I knew it was so, but it’s always good to see it in action. I hope things work out better today!
I love that kid. This shows she has the balls (ovaries, moxie, cajones, whatever it is)to triumph. Rock on baby, indeed.
Simone is going to be one lovely spitfire.
What a great picture. Make sure to not show it to her until she is out of her teens! :0). Go Simone!
I think that is a totally appropriate response to the indignities of the NICU. Smart girl.
(And oh, those sweet hairy baby shoulders…)
If only she knew. Hee.
I firmly believe the NICU experience makes these little ones sassier; enjoy! Sending good thoughts of “inhale, exhale”
I’ve been reading your updates for a while now but not posting, since I’m a “newbie” to your blog.
But I can’t help posting on this one because the picture is so dang CUTE!
Thanks for the picture. I might have to use it as a visual to my boss one day at work … ;-P
Oh Simone! Thanks for giving me a chuckle this morning. I love your spunk. Try not to corrupt the other NICU babies (too much)!
haha! She’ll be corrupting the NICU any day now.
Love those furry shoulders. So cute.
Laughing out loud at work here.
Looks like she’ll become a bold woman – the best kind!
I’m pretty sure that was not directed at you , but at the evil nurse that she had! Great to see that she is such a fighter with attitude. Go Simone!
I am in love.
She’s brilliant, your daughter.
How DO you resist the urge to mold her ears into elfin points? You’re a better mother than I am, clearly.
