THE ELVER AWARD.
The final selection came down to a simple matter of which verse I find myself singing to Simone most often. And so the winner is…
JESSAMY!
“Oh, I wish I were a little platypus,
Yes, I wish I were a little platypus.
I would paddle in my stream
and be a happy monotreme,
Oh, I wish I were a little platypus!”
However, because there were so many excellent entries, I am going to narrow the rest down to my ten favorites and put up a poll, so that you all can vote for the Readers’ Choice ELVER AWARD Recipient! Who will ALSO get chocolates ferried from Zug by my fine mother—if she isn’t too bitter about having been disqualified for an ELVER AWARD herself. I shall try to get the poll up tomorrow.

That is a wonderful Elver verse. Hats off to Jessamy.
Congrats, Jessamy!!! I love that verse!!!!
Huzzah for Alexa! You made it through November. Hats off to you, ma’am, and to Jessamy too.
Congrats, Jessamy! And I say make the Elvers an annual occurence – it’ll continue a delightful tradition, fill up a few days of NaBlo-’bligations AND allow us to utilize the verses which sprang into our heads seconds after the contest closed (just this AM: “Oh I wish I were a migratory swallow / I wish I were a migratory swallow / I’d dive-bomb you with guano / while en route to Capistrano / oh I wish I were a migratory swallow”).
I love that verse!!
Congratulations, Jessamy! And you too, Alexa, for defeating NaBoPloMo! :D
I love all the verses, but can’t remember the original tune. Source please?
Thanks!
Oh my goodness! I am thrilled beyond belief!!! The honor of my verse being sung to sweet Simone is so huge that my loud squeeing is measuring on the Richter scale. (Squee!!!!!)
And the chocolates will be so nice too….
Finally, yay for biology nerdiness paying off!
yay great verse!
*Great* winner! As a proud expat Aussie, the platypus is my favourite animal (alongside the wombat). I will be singing this to my little Australian-American and looking forward to more verses…
Congratulations Jessamy!
Not that it matters at this point, but I have to tell you the two verses that I sing incessantly. I mean it’s truly embarrassing because I’ll catch myself singing this first one OUT LOUD IN THE GROCERY STORE and whatnot. Geez, Leah, get a life. Anyway, here’s one of my favorites:
Oh I wish I were a little tapey worm
Oh I wish I were a little tapey worm
I would diney, diney, diney
All around your intestine-eys
Oh I wish I were a little tapey worm!
Now, here is the one that made me literally pee myself a little when I read it. And I’ve managed to actually memorize it well enough to sing it often (mostly in the MIDDLE OF THE GODDAMN NIGHT) to my sweet, sweet no-sleeping child:
Oh I wish I was a little baby girl
Oh I wish I was a little baby girl
I wouldn’t sleep through the night because I don’t really feel like it so I just wake up all the time screaming and then you have to rock me, but it still doesn’t work and things like white noise and loveys and eating solids don’t help at all…
Oh I wish I was a little baby girl
*thunderous applause*
Well done! That’s such a sweet one.
It has been an exceptionally entertaining NaBloPo Month, so thank you all.
A very deserving winner!
DUDE. I LOVE THIS SONG.
I just had to tell you, apropos of nothing, that this song SAVED ME this morning when I was in the shower! Our 10-month old was MAD about me showering, banging on the shower door and crying, and so I just started singing random verses.
SHE.STOPPED.CRYING.IMMEDIATELY.
I think you are a witch along with your mother… but in any case, GOOD WORK!
