Mash, Mish.
I have a bunch of little updates and, once again, no conceivable way to string them together, so I am resorting to my old friend the bullet-point:
• We are pretty sure that Simone is allergic to rice. Once we discontinued the rice cereal, her eczema improved rapidly and dramatically. It’s still there, but in a much milder form, and the itching must be better as well because there are no more bleeding ears and rubbed-raw eyelids. Of course it is hard to know for certain that removing the rice was what did it—maybe the salves and unguents finally kicked in. I suppose the way to tell would be to reintroduce rice and see what happens, but I’m not eager to do so. I suppose this means no rice pudding or baby-sized handrolls for the foreseeable future.
• I started doing something new, exercise-wise, and it is my favorite routine yet. Though I should warn you that as a result I cannot go down a flight of stairs without wincing in pain and causing my husband to inform me that I am walking like the Tin Man. And yes, I’m going to make you go over to Lemondrop if you want to read about it. It’ll be fun, I promise! I even changed my bio picture!
• Tonight I am meeting my best friend from Junior High for a drink, all thanks to the magic of Facebook. I haven’t seen her in almost ten years, though from the ages of 12 through 16 we wore a literal path between our houses. To be honest, I don’t really “get” Facebook just yet—I have a blog, an email account, and Twitter, so in some ways it seems redundant—but I have to admit that rediscovering people I haven’t talked to in years has been kind of amazing.
• I don’t usually do product reviews, no matter how charming the marketing representative, but someone sent me something I really like, and since we have talked before about the challenges of swaddling older babies, it seemed cruel not to share this with you. Aden + Anais makes large all-muslin swaddling blankets, and when I say large, I do mean large: frankly I don’t think they would have worked for Simone when she was teeny tiny (it would have been like wrapping a mouse in a bedsheet), but for a wriggly almost-16-pounder, they are PERFECT. They would probably work for full-term newborns as well. I use the “winter-warmth” version, which I prefer to the original. It isn’t as heavy as the term “winter warmth” would have you believe, and muslin is very breathable, which I appreciate as I have been paranoid about Simone overheating ever since the apnea nurse told me it was a SIDS risk. We only swaddle Simone’s arms (then bundle her into a sleep sack, which takes care of the legs), but even so, she can wriggle herself free of most blankets. I SO wish I’d found these earlier.
• I finished the poll for the ELVER AWARD Readers’ Choice winner. I intended to narrow the field to ten, but eleven was the best I could do. And yes, I KNOW there is another platypus verse—what can I say, I like Platypi. You can view the entries here, and then vote below.
• And finally, and MOST IMPORTANTLY, tomorrow is St. Nicolas’ Day, and I think you all know what that means. This weekend, a certain someone comes to visit. I have been warning Simone all week that she had better be on her best behavior if she doesn’t want to be beaten, thrown in a sack, and roasted over a makeshift campfire in the woods. May Schmutzli spare you!

I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to be the first commenter – very rare! (unless somebody else is typing as I am).
sorry about the rice allergy – I have a friend whose husband has this – and you should know that because rice is a grass, she may also be allergic to other grasses. It’s probably a good idea to have her tested at some point. But for now – oatmeal or other mixed grain baby cereals will be just as good.
I love the Aden + Anais blankets for swaddling – glad you found them! I recommend them to everyone.
I love all the choices…But I had to vote for my favorite. :)
I love the article on the exercise. I’m guessing that it wouldn’t be a good idea to start pregnant, huh??
I love Jillian from BL. If you have a Nintendo Wii (with the fit thing) she has a “game”. I hope my boyfriend buys the Wii Fit so I can get this game.
I love the crab one! Then you can do little pinch-y on the baby! Whee!
In German class (uh, eons ago) we called Shmultzi “Schwartz Pete.” Same concept, different evil little man. He would beat children with a switch.
Love the shock and awww picture.
Hee…some great choices there. I’ve posted about this on my blog but I didn’t reveal which one was mine, in the interest of fairness. And I only have about 3 readers anyway…
We loved Aden + Anais blankets! We used the regular ones for our fullterm biggish boy (8 lbs) and they seriously rocked. It was almost 100 degrees every day of his early life and yet he needed swaddling. The flannel hospital blankets were too hot so I had DH get ours from home. Presto, a perfect temp baby who still slept all balled up. Must say though that at times the size did seem overwhelming even for our hefty kid. But for swaddles that won’t break and to avoid overheating they ROCK!
Alexa, did anyone ever tell you that you look a lot like ONJ? :)
Good to hear the eczema issue is resolving. Itchy is no fun. BTW, I loved the imagery of “mouse in a bedsheet”! That made me giggle quite a bit!

oh thank you thank you thank you. adali is still using the miracle blanket but she is busting at the seams. she too is a preemie that NEEDS to still be swaddled. at 10 months and 14.5 pounds we have been looking for a better and bigger alternative. i have already ordered mine and can’t wait for them to arrive.
thank again.
St. Nicolaus? I’ve never known anybody else who celebrated that. We do it on Dec 6, though, in classic Slavic tradition. St. Nicolas comes with a stocking full of fruit (okay, and candy and trinkets) for good little boys and girls and coal for baddies. I never got coal. Well… maybe just a little. And, in Czech tradition, the Devil travels with St. Nic, rattling his chains. Not kidding. The Czech people are not kind and gentle souls, even if they did elect a poet as their first post USSR leader.
Aden+Anais blankets are the best. I want to get them for shower gifts but you end up with so many blankets, I hate to overwhelm people with blankets but these really are a superior blanket so I might anyway.
I am anxiously awaiting the 30 day shred for Christmas…
I am de-lurking to complain that my favorite elver award entry did not make it into the reader’s choice poll. So, I just want to say that the Loch Ness monster verse is hilarious! Way to go Lee.
My dad teaches German at a very small high school, and every year he has the students put their shoes in the hallway to see if St. Nick will leave them a treat. When I was in school I always got coal, which my dad thought was incredibly hilarious.
And I really need the shred – thanks for the recommendation!
Here in Germany it’s Knecht Rupprecht coming with St. Nicolaus. He’s all black and furious and is supposed to put the bad kids into his sack to take them away with him. Nicolaus carries a golden book where all the good and bad behaviour of the children are written into. Good kids will get their candy, and for the bad, well, there’s always Rupprecht…
Schmutzli reminded me of David Sedaris’ take on Holland’s St. Nicholas: http://people.cornell.edu/pages/bs16/Christmas/6_to_8_black_men.txt
Good stuff.
Sinterclaus! My husband is from the borderlands between Germany and the Netherlands and used to teach dutch at a university while he was finishing his PhD. The head of the department made him wear a St. Nicolaus costume to class on the 5th (or the class day closest to it), with the full miter and robes and everything. He always complained about how embarrassing it was, but now he sighs wistfully when he remembers it.
And there’s a little line-drawing game (it’s like a house shape with an x and you say a syllable for each line you draw, and the idea is to be able to draw the shape without picking up your pencil) for christmas that his mom taught him, and he’s been chanting it for days now- Das is das haus von Ni-co-laus. Over and over. For days now. I am glad that today is the day and I will hopefully get a reprieve…
Question — how do you find time to exercise with a baby who won’t nap much (unless Simone’s sleep has improved and you haven’t mentioned it)? My almost five-month-old is a catnapper at BEST, and she’s old enough now that I can’t use the “I just had a baby excuse” any more to explain why none of my pants fit! I added the 30-day shred to my Netflix queue but am wondering when on earth I’ll be able to do it.
Two more verses came to mind today:
I wish I was a hippopotamus,
Oh, I wish I was a hippopotamus!
I’d swim right there beside’jer
In the muddy, muddy Niger.
Oh, I wish I was a hippopotamus.
Oh, I wish I was a little kitty cat.
Oh, I wish I was a little kitty cat.
I’d bring you all my mice,
‘Cos I think you’re awfully nice!
Oh, I wish I was a little kitty cat.
At this point I had to stop because my brother was threatening to throw me out of the car.
Please check out this swaddle technique. It saved my life for quite a while. You don’t need a huge blanket (just two normal ones) and it works like your baby has been drinking Benadryl since last Tuesday.

Rice allergy here, too. As you probably know already. Oy. Anyway, my assvice (ass-rice-vise?) is to be very very careful with other grains. If you try them, choose the purest ones possible from the companies with the best practices at avoiding allergens. That way you’ll have a clearer sense of what’s going. Gerber and Beechnut are a no go as far as this is concerned; email me if you want me to look around my allergy haunts for brand recommendations.
Happy St. Nick’s day. I love the man in the red suit, even though I imagine Hallie would bawl if we tried to have her pose with him.
Yeah, there is thing where sometimes babies get a skin reaction from rice cereal, but don’t actually have a rice allergy, so in the future you might want to think about just trying to give her regular brown or white rice, steamed and stuck in a baby food grinder.
I know that everyone in NA is wedded to the whole baby cereal thing, one food at a time etc, but really, we are the only people on the planet who do it that way, and surprise, we have more allergies than any other places around the world.
Give her some veggies from the blender, maybe some beans or meat like I just did with mine. If you are concerned about iron, then grind up some beets.
I’m betting she’ll be just fine regardless.
Oh, the holy terror inspired by St Nicolas and his evil sidekick in our house. It has been a treat. Here he is “Père Fouettard” (whipping father), which just says it all. I have been rather enjoying his reign of terror and am sad it has ended without coal, kicking, potatoes, or being put in a sack. Dammit.
Look!

Ps – I vote for the moth verse. Sublime. Snakka snakka indeed.
We had a problem with ezcema too and were so thrilled to find Halo’s Technical Comfort System clothing for our baby. The fabric is breathable and keeps baby’s skin dry and warm (or cool depending on the temperature). Since we started using the TCS (we found it on Halosleep.com) we haven’t had one breakout – seems like a miracle! Also, we had the most wiggly baby ever too, and use the sleepsack from Halo – they are way better than all the rest – we tried them all! good luck!
